Herman was born August 30, 1874 in Colfax, Wisconsin. He was the fifth child born to Norwegian immigrants Ole Gunleksen Vassbotten and Kari Larsdatter Olerud.

Ole was the son of Gunlek and Martha Olsen. Gunlek was the son of Ole Torgrimssen and Aaste Tormodsdatter Lie.Kari was the daughter of Lars Olsson Toemmerfutgarden and Liv Haraldsdatter Lofthus of Telemark, Norway.
(I'm still gathering information on Tillie's family) Tillie was born in 1874 in Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Hans Hanson and Bertha Anderson, both were born in Norway in 1839 and 1840.
